Therapist for Women in San Diego

Therapist for Women in San Diego

As women, we’re often expected to manage too many roles and expectations. Maybe we’re juggling being mothers, partners, friends, sisters, and daughters, all while managing demanding careers, school, or goals we’ve worked hard to achieve. What people often see on the outside is someone who’s successful and capable, but on the inside, we might be anxious, exhausted, or feeling split in too many directions.

For many high-achieving women, perfectionism is tied to a deeper sense of shame or not feeling “good enough.” So you work harder, take on more, keep everyone happy, and hold yourself to impossible standards, hoping that eventually you’ll feel secure in your worth. But when you’re trying to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one, including yourself.

As a therapist for women in San Diego, I help high-achieving, perfectionistic women understand what’s driving the pressure, work through deeper patterns, and loosen the reins without losing their edge.

What is a women’s therapist?

A women’s therapist is a mental health professional who specializes in the unique biological, psychological, and social challenges of women. It’s someone who understands how relationships, social expectations, motherhood, reproductive health, and trauma affect women’s mental health.

Women’s counseling is still individual therapy. The difference is having the space (and someone who understands) to talk about what you’re experiencing without having to explain why the mental load and expectations to take care of everyone else feel so exhausting.

Hi, I’m Allison, your women’s therapist in San Diego

I’m an EMDR therapist who works especially well with high-achieving, perfectionistic, Type-A women who want to understand what’s underneath their anxiety rather than just learning another temporary way to cope.

I’m also a mom, a high achiever, and a recovering perfectionist. I know what it’s like to hustle so hard that you forget to actually enjoy life. This personal understanding informs my work, but therapy stays focused on you.

My approach to therapy for women in San Diego

My approach is collaborative. While my skills and education can help guide you, I know that you’re the expert on your life. I bring the clinical tools, but together we’ll come up with the solutions that help you overcome the obstacles you’re facing.

I use approaches including EMDR therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you work through underlying beliefs and patterns. If you’ve already done surface-level work and can explain exactly why you struggle but still can’t seem to change how you feel, going deeper may be what you’ve been missing.

My goal isn’t to make you less driven or successful, but to help you keep what works about being ambitious while reducing the anxiety, pressure, and self-criticism underneath it.

What can counseling for women help with?

Women have different reasons for attending therapy than men, families, or couples. For instance, women are twice as likely as men to experience depression, PTSD, and anxiety in their lifetimes. So it is important to seek a women’s therapist who can help you create a satisfying life.

Counseling for women can help with:

Therapy for moms

Motherhood is a unique experience. It’s often both extremely fulfilling and incredibly stressful. Therapy for moms can give you the space to be real about the struggles of motherhood and shelve the need to be the “perfect” mother.

As a women’s therapist in San Diego, I give you the space to process all the joys and hardships that come with being a mother. Keeping track of appointments, school schedules, meals, household needs, deadlines, and your child’s emotional well-being, all while somehow still taking care of yourself. I also know that motherhood can sometimes intensify perfectionism. You might feel you should be the “perfect” parent while staying productive and maintaining your career.

In counseling for mothers, we can work on the anxiety, guilt, over-responsibility, and expectations that make motherhood feel even heavier. My job isn’t to tell you to stop caring. It’s to help you figure out where you can loosen the reins and still feel like yourself.

How to get started

Finding a therapist can feel like one more task on an already long list. I try to make getting started straightforward. The following are the steps you can take:

Schedule a Consultation Call

Start with a free 20-minute consultation call. This call gives you the chance to tell me a little about what’s bringing you to women’s therapy and ask questions. There’s no pressure to book anything; it’s an opportunity to see if I feel like a good fit for women’s counseling for you.

Book your first session and start women’s therapy

If you decide we’re a good fit, book your first session. Before the session, I’ll send you intake paperwork. This gives me an overview of your concerns and mental health history. Then during the session, we’ll clarify your needs and goals for therapy.

Develop the skills to enjoy the life you’ve built again

Through women’s therapy, you can start feeling less controlled by anxiety, trauma, or perfectionism, so you have more capacity to actually be present for the life you’ve created. As your therapist for women, I’ll help you build the tools that actually work for you.
